EarthSource 1

Overview
For a first venture into website authoring, EarthSource 1 was a competent, if ugly effort. It had major problems however (I had a page at the start that said "Get a big monitor, Press full-screen, and Don't use Netscape"), and each page took about 30 seconds to load. At this point, I was more interested in how everything looked, and this is why the only progress made in the transition to Source 2 was some nicer graphics.

Would you consider yourself a brave person?

Well, umm..I just made this page now, so I haven't done much since, you see?? Yesterday I made the 'wikid files' and 'cool links' pages, or whatever they're called. And today? Today I ran out of new ideas.

Today, being the kind and considerate webwriter that I am, I tried to shorten page download times by making all my images smaller around the edges. This screwed everything up.
All the pictures got distorted because they were now the wrong size I designed the pages for. Hmm..I'm having a hard time explaining this to you as if you were American. For the more educated among you : The height and width tags I had put in stretched the smaller images. Do you even care?? Long night of fixing ahead...

Sorry for neglecting you for so long, but school is a big hassle this week. Ah well, I started putting my profile together and began to make an article help page for the more cerebrally challenged of you. Whoo, yes I use big words. That's because I'm a big man. Grr. Or, more likely, Urr....

Some minor stuff over the last few days but today was The Big One. I have been learning how to use things called 'Style Sheets' for the whole week and now, finally, oh wow, I have used them in the site. And they look great. It's not really noticeable in some places, but it really has speeded up writing the pages, and makes it way easier. Just look at the navigation bar in the France article. It looks great now, better than before, anyway. So, for another day, I bid thee farewell...

Ugly bugger, isn't it? I was messing around in paint today and 'Hey presto!', I created a new logo! I think it reflects the more 'mature' side of EarthSource, yeah. In case you were wondering, the old was like this :
Lucky I got rid of that, then. See you tomorrow!

Well, I added a counter onto the front page. Sadly, I could have just used my thumbs to count my visitors. Ah well. I submitted the France article to » HotBot , so it should be up there in 60 days. 60 DAYS!?! Who has that kind of time? I'm a busy guy!!!!! And I won't stand for this outrageous...etc.....
*Ahem* Anyway when it's finished it'll mean that you will be able to put a word (umm..you better use 'France' for the foreseeable future) into the 'Search EarthSource' box at the top of the screen and it'll find it! That'll be fantastic but I'll believe it when I see it. Toodles..

Finally! After weeks of trying (and failing quite spectacularly) I got the left bar in the France page to light up! Check it out, the buttons really light up! That took the best part of three days, so nothing much else has changed. I don't know what I'm going to do next... This is tough going.
Did someone say "Here, man. Give me a job and I can help relieve some of the crushing pressure of running such a Fantastic site." ?

Haha! The France 'Other stuff' page is now the home of the esteemed Mr. Pantalon! Yes, he's a rip-off, but still! He's great!

Some minor tweaking today. The contrast of the backgrounds has been toned down for easier reading. I was tinkering with the homepage background and completely wrecked it, so I've had to make a new one. Easy on the eyes, eh? The ! marks light up from today. Looks good, yes?

Got rid of lots of rubbish bits today. Sadly, some stubborn crap just wouldn't go away. The left frame looks better without the dodgy grainy images. Plus! Finally I found out (with some help - Cheers Mark), why the pages wouldn't show in Netscape. I still hate it, and it makes the pages look crap, but I guess some of you use it. Fools.
Oh yeah, does anyone want to see Mark? Haha! Click » This to see him. You won't regret it!

Oh man! I just did the hardest hour of work ever on EarthSource! I wrote a whole page in the History of France bit, an 'important dates' page. It took ages. It does look rather snazzy though, See for yourself. In other news, the French background is looking decidedly more pink than before. That'd be me messing with things I don't fully understand, then.

Why? Why did I call this thing 'EarthSource'?!? 'FranceSource' is much more appropriate; and I don't even like France that much! The huge task I have set myself is unveiling before me, and it's not particularly pretty. I went about editing France today, y'know sorting the information into sections and stuff, and after an hour's work, I figured out that I had it pretty much right the first time! Ah crap!

Well, I made the pages that appear if you can't do FRAMES in your browser better, with a background and stuff; but, what do you care? You're already in! I just have to get the site ready for the big leap that is the search engines. I don't know why I bother with those non-frames people. And I'm not too fond of you Netscape guys either!!

I just got myself PaintShop Pro 6, so I've been messing about with it and joy of joys, have created a much better banner. It's on the main page. To see the old crap one, look here now :

Oh man!

Expect your eyes to be dazzled with visual loveliness over the coming weeks. If I ever get up off my arse to do some work, of course.
